Fish-A-Thon 2011: Team Playland2

Jim Johns, Jesse Crane & Zack Soltis

Fishing:
Playland Lake

Issue: Young people are disconnected with nature which leads to other social, emotional, education and environmental issues.

Solution: Take kids fishing! The work of Dr. Richard Louv as detailed in his book “Last Child in the Woods” demonstrates that kids who have unstructured outdoor play time do better in school (math, science, social studies and other subjects), have better social skills and lower rates of ADD or ADHD. The Outdoor Foundation did a study to find out how to get kids interested in the outdoors, and learned that fishing rates #1. In other words, taking kids fishing means good things for our society and culture. Finally, kids in the outdoors means future conservationists. According to the American Sportfishing Association, no group of people puts more money or time into conservation than anglers, thanks to sales of fishing licenses and a special excise tax on fishing gear.

For more on getting kids outdoors please visit our partners at the Future Fisherman Foundation and Angler’s Legacy.
