Fish-A-Thon 2011: Team Playland
Randy Cochenour. Terry Zimmerman & Buddy Johns
Fishing: Playland Lake
Issue:Catch and Release has caught on, but isn’t always practiced successfully
Solution: If we let our fish go, we want to know that they lived. Team Playland will highlight these practices with pictures and video of successful catch and release methods.
This helps our "breeder" fish sustain a population of large and plentiful fish.
Things you can do include keeping fish out of water for the shortest time possible, using single barbless hooks, knotless or rubber-mesh nets, and having your camera ready if you plan to photograph the fish prior to release. Big fish should never be lifted by the lower jaw or gills, instead – support the fish horizontally with two wet hands. Finally, fish should never be released after being held on a stringer. Once it goes on the stringer, it is destined for the frying pan.
We hope you’ll take a moment to read more from our Catch and Release Best Practices and Selective Harvest pages.
