Fish-A-Thon 2011: Team Miller
Jim Miller, Gary Miller
Fishing: Platte River and backwater near Ashland, NE
Issue: Trash in the waterway poses threats to fish and wildlife, diminishes the outdoor experience, and jeopardizes access.

Solution: Fishing is a lot of fun, but almost anywhere we do it, we see trash in our waterways. Some of that trash gets there from lazy people who throw used bait containers, food wrappers, drink bottles or tangles of fishing line into the water or around the shore when they’re at the lake. However, much of the trash in our waters doesn’t originate there. Our lifestyle runs downstream, so litter in ditches, parking lots, and neighborhood streets all washes down to a river, lake or pond sooner or later. During the 24 Hour Fish-A-Thon, we will spend some of our time cleaning up around the river and backwater that we’re fishing. However, we also encourage you to help out every day. Obviously, you should never litter. However, any time you see any litter – even if it’s just in the course of your everyday life – walking into the grocery store, picking your kid up from school, or at the park – clean it up. You’ll be helping our waters and our environment, and you’ll be a part of the solution. For every dollar donated to Recycled Fish through our 24 Hour Fish-A-Thon team, Recycled Fish can get two or three gallons of trash out of our lakes, streams and seas. Thanks for your support!
