Fish-A-Thon 2011: Team Fishfeeders

Fishing: Big Creek Lake
Issue:
This is a very popular winter ice fishing spot, and Recycled Fish holds its annual Big Creek Hardwater Open here. One of the issues facing this body of water is trash left out on the ice in winter, and discarded from boats and along the shoreline in summer. When the ice leaves the lake in the spring, countles one pound empty bottles of propane are left floating or sinking. Throughout the summer Styrofoam bait cups, discarded fishing line, and other trash are left behind by anglers and other visitors to the lake. This kind of trash can kill fish and wildlife, jeopardizes angler access, diminishes the experience for visitors, and gives a bad name to anglers and other recreational users.

FishAThon - Team Bass Addicts - Recycled Fish

Solution: This year we will conduct a second lake cleanup in conjunction with Central Iowa Anglers. In 2010, we won the trash cleanup portion of the 24 Hour Fish-A-Thon, and we hope to have an even greater impact this year.

No matter where you fish, when you pick up a fishing rod you are also picking up the responsibility to be not just a user of the waters, but a protector of them. Always take trash bags along with you and clean up any trash you see, even if it isn’t yours.
