Fishing is the #1 Activity that gets kids outdoors.

How did you learn to fish? Odds are a parent, grandparent, friend or relative took you out and got you hooked by showing you the basics and how much fun fishing can be.  "Today's kids spend far less time outside than their parents did. For many of them, tweets are not bird calls but 140-character sound bites. Wii, the electronic game, has replaced "wheee!" -- the squeal of delight."  Current statistics suggest children age 8 to 13 spend nearly six hours a day in front of a screen.  If you get a young kid interested in fishing, It gives that kid the opportunity to do something other than drugs and alcohol.  At least some evidence suggests that kids who learn to fish stay out of trouble as adults. The younger kids take up fishing, the more likely they will reach for a rod and reel than a Nintendo joystick, the more frequently they will to take to a lake than to the mall. If kids aren't getting outside and getting to know nature, they're not likely to care much about it when they get older.  It promotes conservation and outdoors ethics.  If kids aren't getting outside and getting to know nature, they're not likely to care much about it when they get older. I think one of the main reasons I care so much about preserving and improving our environment is because my parents got me outside as much as possible.  Generations in the age group of 25 - 40 DID NOT learn to fish as much as their previous generations.  Unfortunately, many kids today have no such mentor to learn the thrills of fishing from.

Let your kids go out and play. But you're not going to be able to just tell them, are you? So make your kids go out and play.
Turn off the video games, shut down the computer, unplug the TV ... and send your children outside for some good old-fashioned fun.
