Fishing: Eagle Lake in Spicer Minnesota
Issue: Eagle Lake is located in Spicer, Minnesota. Like many of the local waters, it is threatened by nutrient runoff primarily from local agriculture, however, city waste water, improperly working septic systems, and fertilizers used by landowners also play a part. This causes harmful algae blooms and overall decrease in water quality which results in a decrease of native insect life, forage fish, and plant life which are all necessary for a healthy population of predatory fish (such as bass, pike, and other sport fish) .
Solution: The issue of water quality in lakes such as Eagle is like most major problems facing our fisheries; complex and seemingly daunting. The solution is neither easy nor straightforward, however there are many things we can do. At both the individual (angler/steward) level as well as at the community level we must obey clean water law and support enforcement of them to include proper agricultural practices and proper waste water treatment. As individuals we can can speak with our votes and our dollars. Demand your local representation act in the interest of our fisheries. As often as possible, support companies whose agricultural products were grown using sustainable practices. Even more simply, avoid use of chemical fertilizers and pick up your pets’ waste. Ensure that your septic system is working properly. In short, think about your fisheries’ future as often as you can.
