Fish-A-Thon 2010: Team Steel City Anglers
Greg Moore & Tyson Stahl
Pittsburgh, PA
Fishing: Canonsburg Lake
Issue: Community awareness and stewardship for local resource

Canonsburg Lake is in serious decline, and in desperate need of restoration and improvements. Since it's creation in the 1940s the lake has been steadily filling in with sediment from the surrounding watersheds. This has dramatically reduced the overall volume, area, and depth of the lake and reduced available fish habitat. As spawning and deep water habitats continue to fill in with sediment, the lake will become increasingly unable to support a self-sustaining, diverse fish population. This can also cause secondary affects to the birds and mammals in the area. If we let this resource go we will lose a wonderful place to get away for a peaceful picnic, bird watch, boat, fish, and would tremendously impact the small businesses located on the lake.
Solution: Raise awareness of the issue beyond the angling community. Contribute both financially, and as stewards of the lake. Inspire and encourage others to become more involved; whether on the pick-up after yourself (and others) level, or on a more proactive level to get the major restoration changes done. The more people showing they care, the sooner change will come!
