Spring Photo Essay

“The first day of spring is one thing, and the first spring day is another. The difference between them is sometimes as great as a month.”
- Henry Van Dyke
That’s sort of how it’s been where I live, in the Loess Hills of Western Iowa. My wife and I love exploring in our kayaks, and our first evening outing of the year was an impromptu adventure, capitalizing upon the first weather that demanded that we put everything else aside and pick up our paddles.

Crossing Waterfalls

By: Matt Roberts
When I had the opportunity to see him speak at a convention in Western Washington, AK Best was as good as a legend to me. I had been reading his monthly contribution to Fly Rod and Reel Magazine and had read of his fishing exploits as told by his friend and fly fishing author John Geriach. In Mr. Best’s own writings and in his fly patterns I had found great admiration for the honesty of his flies and through Geriach’s writings had come to admire him for (as interpreted through Geriach’s prose) his unblinking wisdom when dealing with fish, flies and feathers, as well as his comedic timing.

Volunteer with Recycled Fish

The stewardship message advances through everyday things we do. We are caretakers of our lakes, streams and seas when we practice catch and release, pick up trash…or install a low flow shower head and CFL light bulbs.
And yet, there are greater things we can do to advance the stewardship ethic, and it takes men and women who are willing to devote time to be leaders.
We’re looking for leaders at Recycled Fish. People who are willing to put in a few hours one or two nights a week - trading in TV time for something that will have impact - showing up at an event or creating one - and at times even trading in a little time on the water fishing for time on the water doing something to give back.
What’s great is that it’s so rewarding. It feels as good to know you’ve done something big, been a part of something greater than yourself, as it does to land a fish or lace up for a hike. When you share your time and talents, everybody wins.
Many of our volunteer opportunities can be addressed from where you are - wherever that is - whenever your schedule permits!
Here are a few areas where we’re looking for help. Take a look and see where you fit in:

Ice Out Catfish

The sweet smell of spring may mean blossoming blue bonnets and blooming bushes to some outdoor enthusiasts, but to others, spring’s sweet smell is something sour. It’s shad lining shorelines that spells dinner bells for catfish, and savvy catfish anglers can capitalize on it.
Spring may bring images of trout out west, or pictures of ice-out pike where they patrol the waters, but cats can be found across the continent, so for many of us, cats are among the kings of spring.

Predicting the Rain
Those of us who spend significant time outdoors tend to have certain skills not necessarily shared by our couch-bound brethren (and “sistren”). You may be able to coax up a roaring campfire without a match, or catch a string of trout for your supper with flies you tied from the elk you shot. But if you really want to impress your buddies, there’s another way.

Eco Friendly Eating…

Thanks to everyone who joined us at Islamorada Fish Company on Friday, March 21st (Good Friday)!
In observance of the holiday, many eat fish and in the Omaha / Council Bluffs area, Islamorada Fish Company (next to Bass Pro Shops) was the place to do it!
A portion of the proceeds from the night’s sales were donated to Recycled Fish to help advance the stewardship ethic.
