Stewardship Tip – Recycled Clothes
By Arshia | June 12, 2011
We are stewards; we recycle clothes.
Take old clothes them to the Goodwill, the VFW, or the local thrift shop. In many communities used clothing is très chic and will sell like hotcakes.
A garage sale is also a time-honored method to recycle clothing and to put a little green in your pocket.
We are stewards; we repair clothing rather than throwing it out.
Fishing apparel is imminently repairable. We have, what may be, the original pair of gore-tex waders. They are almost twenty-years old and are more Aqua-Seal than gore-tex. But, because they have been repaired, they are still functional and watertight.
You can easily repair waders, shoes, and boots. Soles can be reglued and patches can be set with Aqua-Seal, Shoe-Goo, or Barge Cement. Some people are even using Gorilla Glue with good results. If you do have waders that are beyond repair, save ‘em and use ‘em for patches on your new waders or boots.
We are stewards; we buy items made from recycled material.
Sailcloth is particularly strong and will work well when recycled as bags and totes. One recycler, 360 Degree Sailcloth Bags, will even attach a tag indicating where the sailcloth sailed.
In addition to material and old clothes, some of the bigger corporations, such as Trek Bontrager, are using inner tubes, advertising banners, and seat-belts to make pouches, bags, and slings.
And it is not just clothes and clothes that are recycled, the Unifi Corporation combines pre-consumer, polyester, waste fiber with recycled plastic bottles to create fibers that are used in various types of apparel including casual and dress wear.
As stewards, we can keep our unwanted or unused clothes out of the landfill by recycling or repairing them. And when we go to the store for new clothes, we can look for products that are made from recycled materials.
We are stewards; we recycle.
