Stewardship Tip – Legislative Season is Open

Many State Legislatures are now in session. Your representatives are proposing and discussing legislation that will affect the future of our streams, lakes, and rivers and our fish.

Make sure the your voice is heard. Find your state government’s website at www.usa.gov and look for links to your state’s legislative branch.

Once you have found the website for your legislature, look for legislative committees. That’s a good place to start. A committee’s web page will often list pending legislation that deals with the committee’s area of interest such as Natural Resources, Environmental Conservation, Tourism, and Parks and Recreation. Legislation discussed in these committees can have a strong bearing on our rivers, streams, and lakes and our fish.

If there is legislation that will affect your streams, lakes, rivers, or your fish, there are several things that you can do.
Write a letter to your representatives. Let them know, clearly, where you stand. If you have supporting data, summarize them in a cover letter and attach your data. Even if you don’t, a letter or email can make a big difference. Make your letter short, respectful, and to the point.
Testify at committee meetings. Even if you can’t make it to your state capitol, look for committees that have meetings throughout your state.
Your representatives want to know where you stand. It is important to let them know. If your legislative season is just starting, or if it is in full swing, get yourself up to speed on the bills that are being proposed in your state’s legislative branch and let your representatives know where you stand.
