Stewardship Tip Sep 22nd, 2009- FSC Certified
The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), a nongovernmental, non-profit organization, promotes responsible management of the world’s forests.
The FSC developed standards for Forest Management to ensure that forestry practices retain integrity and maintain the ecological balance of the forest. They also developed standards for Chain of Custody that track the movement of material from the forest, through all the production process, to retailers and consumers.
Foresters, pulp providers, mills, merchants, and printers must all obtain FSC certification in order for a product to carry the FSC logo or label.
Obtaining FSC Certification indicates that a company is dedicated to sustaining our forests.
Look for the FSC logo when you purchase paper or wood. The FSC maintains a list of retailers that sell FSC-Certified building material, furniture, and paper.
Why it is important to the Fish: Forests, even in a major storm, absorb rainfall and prevent flooding. Clear-cutting, removing large stands of timber in a concentrated area, is, unfortunately, still practiced; the resulting tract provides no buffer for rainwater. Flooding, often the result, can adversely affect wild fish populations. Raging waters can scour river channels killing eggs and juvenile fish.
When a product carries the FSC Logo, it has been verified to come from a source that practices sustainable forestry. When we purchase FSC-Certified products, we help to protect our rivers and streams.
Healthy fish are the beneficiaries of our actions.
