Stewardship Tip Oct 31st, 2008-Green Investing
A solar cell manufacturer in California has developed a proprietary ink that is used to deposit a solar cell’s semiconductor on a low-cost foil substrate. This technology promises to bring low cost solar panels to the market. This is significant given the fact that an average set of roof-top solar panels for a home currently costs about $20,000 to $30,000. This manufacturer received financial backing from a number of venture funds and corporations. It is a good example of what can happen when investment capital is applied to clean technology initiatives. It is an example of what we can do when we make green investments.
Consider Green Investments: Green investments can involve investing in companies that produce clean energy, it can involve investing in companies that produce the technology for clean energy. It can also involve being a shareholder advocate in an attempt to influence corporate behavior. What is the carbon footprint of your current and potential investments? Do the companies in your portfolio use clean or recycled water? These are valid questions to ask those companies in your portfolio and those companies in whom you are considering investing.
Caveat Emptor: Any investment carries with it the element of risk. Make sure to do your due diligence on any green investment before you buy, just as you would with any other fund or equity.
Why it is important to the fish: We all do our part to reduce our footprint on the environment and our impact on our fish. When we invest in green, we can rest easy knowing our investment portfolio is doing its part to support and maintain the environment and, ultimately, our fish
