  • Stewardship Tip Nov 2nd, 2010- Slow Down

Speed Destroys Fuel Efficiency: The Hypermilers over at cleanmpg.com report that, in constant speed tests, a Honda Civic Hybrid averaged 67.1 mpg at 50 mph. At 60 mph, that average dropped to 51.8 mph. That’s a drop of over 15 mpg for only 10 mph of speed.

You don’t need a hybrid to save gas: Much to the chagrin of those who follow me, I drive slowly. I rarely drive over 55 mph. I’ve never been a real speed demon, however, I made a conscious effort to slow down about three years ago. Since that time, I have gotten between 17 and 20 mpg in combined city/highway driving. That’s up from 12 to 13 mpg. That’s not bad for an eight cylinder pickup truck.

Many of us drive cars or trucks that don’t rival the fuel efficiency of the Honda Civic Hybrid. That does not mean that we can’t improve our gas mileage. Slowing down will save you money. It will reduce your gas consumption. And, it will reduce your emissions.

Why it is important to the fish: Airborne nitrogen is a major contributor to pollution in the Chesapeake Bay and its rivers. It accounts for about one-third of the total load of nitrogen pollution in the Bay. According to the Chesapeake Bay Program, much of the nitrogen that is deposited is nitrogen oxide that comes from cars and trucks. Elevated nitrogen levels cause more algae to grow, blocking out sunlight and reducing oxygen for fish, blue crabs, and other Bay life.

By slowing down, we reduce emissions. Initially, air quality improves, but, ultimately, water quality improves as well. Our fish benefit as a result.

The VENTAFISH tool was designed to save fish and conserve our fisheries for future generations. It is a fish “fizzing” tool that can be used on both fresh and saltwater fish.

As the weather cools, fish move into deeper water and may need to be “fizzed” or “vented” to survive after release.
