  • Stewardship Tip Nov 24th,2009- Recycling Packing Material

Foam PeanutsFor a number of years now, we have been saving packing materials. We recently shipped a number of fragile items. Rather than purchasing new packing material, we reused some foam “peanuts” that we had received several years ago. We put a note in the package encouraging the recipients to save the material and and reuse it in their next shipment.

We saved some money; if you’ve purchased any foam packing material recently, you know that it isn’t cheap. And we were reusing – not even recycling. There was no net energy loss. In addition, there was no waste or toxicity associated with production of more packaging. Did we mentioned that we saved money and time?

Whenever we receive foam packing material in a shipment, we put in in a bag. We used to store it in a closet, but it has now graduated to the garage. It’s always right there; rather than a trip to the store to purchase material, we walk to the garage. Another net savings in energy. In the event we need a little more filler, we use shredded paper from our paper shredder.

If you receive foam packing material, put it in a bag and save it. Use it next time you need to ship something. Encourage your recipients to do the same.

Why it is important to the fish: Reuse keeps trash out of landfills. It keeps trash out of our streams, rivers, and lakes. It reduces the emissions from manufacturing new products. When we reuse, we all benefit. Our fish benefit as well.
