  • Stewardship Tip May 4th, 2010- Don’t Print, Save

Conservation forumRather than printing a web page, save it to a file. You’ll save paper. You’ll also save money by using less paper and less ink. Plus, you’ll save resources.

Saving a copy of a web page, either as HTML, PDF, or XPS, will help you to reduce the number of pages that you print everyday.

On the Mac: Web pages can be saved locally using the ‘Save Page As’ option on the File Menu in Firefox and Chrome, or the ‘Save As’ option on the File Menu in Safari. This will save the web page as HTML on your local disk. The files can then be opened using any of the web browsers on your system.

Web pages can be saved as a PDF by selecting the ‘Print’ option from the File menu, then selecting the ‘PDF’ button in the lower left corner of the Print dialog box. This will work in Firefox, Chrome, and Safari. The files can then be viewed using Preview or Acrobat.

On the PC: Just as you can on the Mac, you can use the ‘Save As’ option from the File menu to save files in HTML format. This will work in IE, Firefox, and Chrome. You can then view the files using your browser.

To save a web page as an XPS document, select the ‘Print’ option from the File menu and set the printer to ‘Microsoft XPS Document Writer.’ The files can then be viewed using the XPS Viewer on Windows platforms. As an alternative, you can download products such as doPDF.com, a relatively lightweight PDF document generator, that will allow you to generate PDF documents from the Print dialog (the free version is relatively ad-free).

Why it is important to the fish: Trees in riparian environments absorb and filter contaminated runoff. They can prevent pollutants from entering near shore waters.

While a single tree helps to prevent runoff, a forest is a powerful force that can act to keep a stream healthy. And, while a single individual can help to conserve a tree by reducing her or his printed output, a population becomes a powerful force for the conservation and preservation of forests when it reduces its printed output.
