Stewardship Tip May 26th, 2009- Recycling CDs and DVDs
The best option for recycling CDs and DVDs is to reuse them. For computer software, consider donating it to a computer refurbisher. Music CDs and DVDs can be sold on-line, donated to thrift shops, or shared with friends. Consider starting an exchange program at work.
Recycle those CDs and DVDs that you can’t reuse. There are two organizations, the CD Recycling Center of America and Back Thru the Future, that recycle CDs and DVDs. There will be a small cost to ship your CDs and DVDs to these organizations (use the USPS Media Mail rate) but it is worth it to keep these items out of your landfill. The CD Recycling Center will also accept jewel cases (with a recommended donation).
Why it is important to the fish: Every CD or DVD that we reuse or recycle is one that we keep our of our local landfill. Reuse reduces the resources that are required to produce CDs and DVDs. It takes about 24 gallons of water to manufacture 30 CDs. When we reuse CDs and DVDs we reduce our demand on the resources and increase the availability of water for our fish.
