Stewardship Tip May 11th, 2010- Don’t Print, Save in the Cloud
As an alternative to printing a document, save a copy of the document in the cloud. Google Docs (docs.google.com) for example, provides you with storage space to which you can upload documents. Many service providers, alternatively, provide on-line storage on which you can save documents. You can also use on-line email services, such as Yahoo! Mail, for storage by opening a new mail message, attaching a document, and saving the message as a draft. To access your document, edit the draft, and download the attached document.
The advantage of using the cloud is that your documents will be available on any device that is connected to the internet. This can be especially advantageous if you use several different computers. The disadvantage is that you must be connected to the internet to access your document. You will also be at the mercy of the available bandwidth. If you are on the wrong end of a slow connection, you may have trouble accessing your documents. If connectivity is an issue, thumb drives are an inexpensive, viable alternative.
Despite the disadvantages, using the cloud provides you with another alternative for reducing your printed output. It can provide you with accessibility to your documents wherever you can find internet connectivity.
Why it is important to the fish: Forests play an important role in maintaining water temperatures in streams. As Robert Naiman notes in River Ecology and Management: Lessons from the Pacific Coastal Region, “Vegetation in the riparian zone helps regulate the micro climate of stream-riparian systems.” He adds that streams with adequate shade are “cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter.” These are conditions under which cold water species, such as trout and salmon, thrive.
When we reduce the number of pages that we print, we reduce the demands that we place on our forests for paper production. By reducing the demands, we help to preserve vegetation in the riparian zone. Our cold water fisheries, ultimately, benefit from our simple actions. Rather than printing a document, save it in the cloud and help to reduce the demands on our forests.
