  • Stewardship Tip Mar 31st, 2009- Fix a Leak

Half Home & Merced RiverThe U.S. Environmental Protection Agency designated the week of March 16th as Fix a Leak Week. We appreciate their efforts to encourage consumers to take action. We would, however, argue that any time you notice a leak, you should fix it.

There are economic benefits. Leaks can cost you money by increasing your water bill. There are conservation benefits. According to the EPA, leaks can account for, on average, 11,000 gallons of water wasted in the home every year.

Faucets will usually start leaking when the gasket or o-ring becomes over-compressed or breaks down. The valve seat may, also, have corroded. DoItYourself.com provides a video that demonstrates how you can replace these items. In addition, the EPA’s
Fix a Leak Week Website provides step by step instructions on how you can identify and rectify leaks in your plumbing fixtures.

Why it is important to the fish: One of our favorite places to fish, Pumpkin Creek, met its demise years ago. Poor water conservation practices and overexploitation of the aquifer dried it up. Pumpkin Creek is gone. Where it flowed, there is only a dry streambed. There are no fish.

Water conservation starts in the home. By conserving water, we take the necessary step to ensure that future generations will have healthy streams, rivers, and lakes. When we fix leaky plumbing fixtures, we conserve water. You can save a little money on your water bill as well.
