Stewardship Tip Mar 17th, 2010 – Angler Access
This week’s Stewardship Tip is something of a “special report.”
Our goal with the weekly tip is to provide one simple thing anybody can do to help our fisheries through everyday living. This week is a little different.
At Recycled Fish, we don’t participate in legislative action, political matters, or take positions on candidates or bills. Recently there has been a lot of discussion in the media and on the internet with regard to the Interagency Ocean Policy Task Force, its role in fisheries management, and what changes may be coming for anglers.
Much of this has been connected to reporting by Robert Montgomery, a Senior Writer for ESPN / B.A.S.S. who also serves on our Board of Directors. We are proud to have Robert on our board. He has a longstanding track record of commitment to conservation; few have reported more thoroughly on the issues facing our waters in the past 25 years.
We have issued a statement with our position on this issue on the Recycled Fish website. You may want to give it a read.
After doing so, if you’d like to contact decision makers in the Interagency Ocean Policy Task Force, Congress, and the White House, you can do so simply via a form at www.KeepAmericaFishing.org. Feel free to use excerpts of our statement if you wish.
Why angler access is important to the fish: Recreational anglers provide conservation through participation. The purchase of fishing licenses, tackle, boats and boat fuel is the primary economic engine for the funds needed to protect our fisheries and improve, enhance or recover damaged fisheries. Policy should encourage Recreational Angling.
We also want to emphasize that this is not a right vs. left issue. We are not taking a position for or against the Obama administration or the Task Force. We are, however, encouraging all anglers to make certain that our voices are heard.
Speaking up is another way we can live as stewards of our lakes, streams and seas.

Clean water, abundant fish and plenty of places to drop a line with family and friends is what KeepAmericaFishing.org is all about.
The sportfishing industry, anglers, and boaters provide most of the funding for fisheries conservation.
Over the past 10 years we’ve seen an increase in efforts to restrict or ban recreational fishing as a means to address a variety of issues.
The Keep America Fishing Advocacy Campaign’s goals are to minimize the barriers to recreational fishing and thwart attempts to unduly prevent people from enjoying the sport while maintaining the health of our nation’s fisheries resources.
