  • Stewardship Tip, June 9th, 2009- Bike to Work

Bike laneAs we watch gasoline prices inch up the scale, biking to work sounds like an idea whose time has come. It is certainly not a new idea, though. Many cyclists have been using their bicycles to commute to and from their places of work for quite some time. Whether the idea is new or not, it is an idea that can benefit your health, your pocketbook, and the environment.

Getting started is easy. All it takes is a bike, a helmet, and a lock. The Utah Department of Transportation has put together a guide to help you get rolling.

Cycling to and from work can be invigorating. You can realize aerobic benefits even at the most moderate pace. In many cases, you can avoid traffic. By biking to work, you will save money.

Why it is important to the fish: We have a love/hate relationship with our cars. On the one hand, they take us to places where we can catch fish. On the other hand, our cars pollute the environment with sulfur dioxide, hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxide, and carbon dioxide.

Sulfur dioxide, in particular, is one of the principal components of acid rain. Acid rain has had a severe impact on many high country lakes in the Adirondack Mountains. In an ongoing study of 51 Adirondack water bodies, the Adirondack Lakes Survey Corporation has noted that the percentage of acidified lakes has increased from 45 to 51% since the early 1990s. However, they have also noted that 15 of the study lakes have shown improvement. Every step that we take to conserve helps improve the situation; bicycling to work helps to reduce the amount of sulfur dioxide in the atmosphere.

Try riding your bike to work. You will feel healthier, save some money, and help to reduce pollutants in the environment. Our fish, ultimately, will benefit.
