Stewardship Tip June 16th, 2009- Duct Tape
Whether it is fused or braided, gel-spun lines have high tensile strength in a small diameter. These are appealing characteristics for anglers; gel-spun lines have many applications in fresh and saltwater. They do, however, have a tendency to slip on the shaft of fishing reels.
To keep gel-spun lines from slipping, wrap the shaft of the reel with a piece of duct tape before you install the line. Make at least two, firm wraps on the shaft. Then, attach the line to the shaft with a 100% arbor knot or a uni-knot. The duct tape will hold the gel-spun line firmly in place and prevent it from slipping. After you have cinched the knot firmly against the shaft, finish it with a drop of Loctite 406.
As you wrap gel-spun line on to your reel, exert pressure against the line by using a gloved hand (a leather work glove works well). This will help to apply the line firmly. Work the line back and forth so that it is applied in crosshatches. The pressure and crosshatches will provide additional insurance against slippage. The crosshatches will also prevent individual winds from becoming buried in the previous winds.
Why it is important to the fish: Tackle that performs well can help you land fish efficiently. If your line slips on the reel, much of your effort to land a fish will be wasted. You also run the risk of exhausting your prey. This could lead to mortality after release.
It’s worth your time to check your tackle periodically. If you are installing gel-spun line, use a little duct tape to help secure the line on to the shaft of the reel. It will help you to land fish and, ultimately, release them back into the wild unharmed.
