  • Stewardship Tip Jun 1st, 2010 – Dun Angus

Dun AngusDun Angus is one of the finest prehistoric fortresses in Western Europe. Sitting on the westernmost Aran Island, Inis Mor, Dun Angus had been occupied for over two and a half thousand years, ca. 1500 BC – 1000 AD.

Today, Dun Angus is guarded by a small contingent from Ireland’s Office of Public Works and several signs stating that “the public are requested to aid the commissioners in preserving it.”

“The public are requested…” That statement rings true. If every visitor to Dun Angus had taken a rock as a souvenir, it would not be the magnificent monument that it is today.

Think of Dun Angus as a parable for fishing. If every angler took a fish, many fisheries would not be what they are today. Indeed, several fisheries would no longer exist.

This summer, return a few more fish to the sea and help preserve our fisheries. Catch and release has helped to save many fisheries and can help to steward our waters as we move toward the future.

We have a pretty nice guide, even if we say so ourselves, to catch and release fishing at our RecycledFish.org website.

This summer, if you visit Dun Angus, or any historical site, tread lightly so that future generations can enjoy it. If you stop to fish along the way, return a few more fish to the water so that future anglers can enjoy our sport.
