  • Stewardship Tip Dec 22nd, 2009- Happy Holidays

LakeWe hope that, no matter how you choose to celebrate, there will be some fishing on your calendar this holiday season.

We hope, too, that, during this past year, you have made the “noble choice,” to quote Teeg Stouffer, executive director of RecycledFish, “to live as a steward.”

In this week’s installment, we’ve highlighted some of the Stewardship Tips that we’ve passed along during the year. We hope that you have found them to be helpful.

Reusing packing materials keeps styrofoam peanuts out of landfills.

Biodegradeable baits help to reduce phthalates in our lakes; this helps to reduce the chances for transgenderism.

A leaky toilet wastes water. When you fix leaks in your toilet, you save water and money!

Looking for a New Year’s resolution? Biking to work is not only good for our fish, it is also good for your health and easy on the wallet.

Quitting smoking is the classic New Year’s resolution. if you are a smoker, consider quitting; it is one of the best things that you can do for your health and for your pocketbook.

Baking soda and vinegar are good, biodegradeable alternatives to use around the house. Beeswax and lanolin are, as well.

Clean, freeze, and dry your gear before going to another stream, lake, or river. Never release a fish into a body of water unless it came out of that body of water. This will help prevent the spread of aquatic nuisance species, such as New Zealand Mud Snails. It also helps to keep diseases such Viral Hemorrhagic Septicemia (VHS) from spreading.
