  • Stewardship Tip Aug 25th, 2009- Replacing Flapper Valves

FescueWhen the water in the toilet runs constantly, it is a good indication that the flapper valve needs to be replaced. Having a flapper valve that leaks is the equivalent of having a water faucet run continuously.

To replace the flapper, turn off the water supply to your toilet and flush to empty the tank. Remove the pull chain, remove the old flapper (ours pull off a set of mounting tabs), and clean the exit hole with a sponge and vinegar to remove any buildup. This will help to create a firm seal with the new flapper valve. Take your old flapper with you to the hardware store as a reference. Snap your new flapper valve into place, replace the chain, and test to make sure the handle actuates the valve. Also make sure that there is a little be of slack in the chain when the valve is closed. When the valve is seated and the chain is set correctly, turn the water back on. You’re back in business.

Why it is important to the fish: Our lifestyles run downstream, conservation, though, ripples upstream. When we conserve water in the home, we use less from the sources that supply our municipal water. This preserves the water for our fish.

A flapper valve that does not seal correctly can waste about 750 gallons of water per month. If your flapper valve needs to be replaced, do it today and help to conserve water for our fish.
