Stewardship Tip Aug 10th, 2010- Buy Recycled
When you buy products made from recycled materials, you reap the same benefit that you do when you actually recycle. You keep trash out of landfills.
There are many products available that are made from recycled materials. The City of Omaha, for example, collects yard waste, grass clippings, tree trimmings, and garden waste, breaks it down, and sells it as as organic compost. The Trex Partners use recycled wood fiber and recycled polyethylene plastic to manufacture decking material. And we, at RecycledFish, offer a hat made from recycled fibers that, if we say so ourselves, is quite stylish.
There are additional benefits that our fish reap when we choose products made from recycled materials. Bob Lilienfeld, editor of the Use Less Stuff Report, noted that “recycled HDPE and PET resin production consumes significantly less energy, generates significantly fewer greenhouse gases, and produces less solid waste than does the production of virgin HDPE and PET resins.”
HDPE and PET are both manufactured from petroleum. The process of refining oil uses a great deal of water. Extracting large volumes of water from a watershed places demands on the local water supply near the refinery. This, in turn, can adversely affect local fish populations.
The effluents from oil refineries, moreover, often contain compounds such as alkylphenol 4-tert-butylphenol. This compound is estrogenic and may act as an endocrine disruptor in fish.
Buying recycled reduces waste, preserves resources, and helps to keep the environment clean for our fish. When you look for building materials, clothing, compost, or caps, look for products that are made from recycled materials. When you buy recycled, you will, ultimately, be conserving habitat for our fish.
