24 Hour Fish-A-Thon: Where do the funds go?
By FishRecycler | July 7, 2010
The Recycled Fish 24 Hour Fish A Thon is anglers fishing around the clock and around the country to raise awareness for the problems facing our fisheries, and money to help solve those problems.
So where does that money go?
The simplest answer to this important question is to say that it goes to “engage, educate and equip anglers to be good stewards of our waters. ”
The 24 Hour Fish-A-Thon is the annual fundraiser for the Recycled Fish General Fund, so it is used by all of our programs.
How far does it go? A $25 gift could get 50 – 75 gallons of trash out of our waters through the Recycled Fish “On Ice” Tour, or it could get 25 people taking the Sportsman’s Stewardship Pledge. We can pull off an event to teach the Stewardship Ethic to 50 – 100 kids for about $60.
However, we also help specific issues on the ground – for example last year, Kevin Winkler (MN) chose preventing zebra mussels from entering a specific lake as his issue. Using funds that he raised, we bought a large metal sign for the boat ramp.
When we’re partnered with particular organizations (a TU chapter or CCA chapter enters a team, for example) net funds are split 50/50 between the two organizations. With our Boat US Angler Partnership, 50% of net funds from any team with Boat US Angler members are directed to the Boat US Foundation.
We’re eager to add more teams in the Gulf States - funds they raise will go to Gulf Oil Spill restoration efforts.
