24 Hour Fish-A-Thon Registration Deadline Approaching

    By FishRecycler | August 2, 2012

    Team Extreme Philly Fishing

When Leo Sheng and his buddies, who call themselves “Team Extreme Philly Fishing,” cast their lines into Philadelphia’s urban Schuylkill River, they won’t be alone. On the other coast, Jeff Sutton & Jason Hyman will be dropping lines into San Diego Bay as “Team J&J Kalico Kings.” In the vast landscape between them will be dozens of other fishing teams fishing around the clock – 24 hours straight – to raise awareness for the problems facing our waters, and money to help solve those problems in the 2012 Recycled Fish 24 Hour Fish-A-Thon presented by Berkley. This is the last call to join those teams.

“It’s fun, because we also compete for weekly prizes leading up to the main event,” says Program Director Ben Leal. “For example, one week, the challenge was to get a donation jar set up somewhere, and you could win a Shakespeare Ugly Stick Combo. We’ve held mini-thons and given away $100 Scheel’s and DICK’S Sporting Goods Gift Cards, Onos Sunglasses, Castalia Flip Nets, fly rods, and more.”

Registration deadline is Sunday, August 12 for the big contest yet to come. On September 7 & 8, teams everywhere compete for prizes such as the fishing trip of the lifetime to destinations like Minnesota’s Spring Bay Resort, Montana’s FishTales Outfitting, or a Great Lakes ice fishing outing in the Apostle Islands with Jim Hudson’s On The Spot Guide Service.

The 24 Hour Fish-A-Thon presented by Berkley is a fundraiser first and a competition second, but the weekly challenges leading up to the event and the contest during the Fish-A-Thon make it fun,” said Leal. “This year’s focus is on identifying specific local issues and helping fund specific solutions.”

31 teams have signed up from the U.S. and Canada. Focus issues include fishing line recycling bins, constructing barriers to fish passage, youth fishing programs, and invasive species education campaigns.

“Our goal this year was to have a team in all 50 States,” says Leal. “Now is the time for anglers to jump onboard!”

The Recycled Fish 24-Hour Fish-A-Thon is open to anglers in all 50 states and Canada. To participate, anglers visit RecycledFish.org/FishAThon and register. After they receive their Fish-A-Thon welcome kit in the mail, each team member’s next step is to secure donations from family, friends, co-workers and the public in general. Donations range from $5 – $2000.

Next they go fishing! Lines are cast Friday, September 7 at 7 pm until Saturday September 8 at 7 pm. Fish are photographed and teams self score each catch using a scoring grid. Prizes are given for highest scoring fish, and special categories like the best photos, the most trash picked up and more.
